Su nombre significa literalmente &#8220;Ciudad al borde del pozo de los Itz\u00e1es&#8221;. Esta ciudad fue hace mil a\u00f1os el centro pol\u00edtico, religioso y cultural del imperio maya.<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Famoso sitio conocido mundialmente por el juego de luz y sombra que en cada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycancuntours.com.mx\/chichen-itza-tours\/tour-excursiones\">equinoccio<\/a> ocurre sobre la escalinata del basamento piramidal conocido como El castillo. En este, el sol, conforme asciende sobre el horizonte, va iluminando la alfarda poniente del basamento, creando tri\u00e1ngulos de luz y sombra que parecen descender hasta la cabeza de serpiente en el desplante de la alfarda. Este evento, logrado a partir de la correcta orientaci\u00f3n e inclinaci\u00f3n de los planos del basamento, manifiesta el gran nivel de conocimiento astron\u00f3mico y arquitect\u00f3nico que los Mayas pose\u00edan, y que ha dado lugar a ser una de las culturas y regiones m\u00e1s estudiadas en torno a estos temas, adem\u00e1s de la organizaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtico territorial y la explotaci\u00f3n de recursos. Se le atribuye una funci\u00f3n astron\u00f3mica puesto que las aberturas de sus muros estaban orientadas hacia Venus y otros astros.
